Presented in partnership with the Lewes Historical Society.
About the book
Adam Hale, an American Revolutionary War blockade runner, builds a fortune in trade with France, England, and Jamaica during the Federal Period (1783–1822), when American captains dominate the seas. In a novel featuring Barbary pirates, Regency balls, privateers, a slave uprising, duels, the Peninsular Campaign, and pitched naval battles, Hale struggles to achieve a meaningful, personal commitment of civic duty to his country, while trying to reconcile evil in the world with an omniscient and loving God.
About the author
Thomas E. Crocker is a retired partner in a large national law firm and a one-time foreign service officer. The author of two books of historical nonfiction (Empire’s Eagles and Braddock’s March), Crocker based Captain Hale’s Covenant on the life of his four-times-great-grandfather.
Crocker was in conversation with Andrew J. Lyter at the event.
Andrew J. Lyter is the executive director of the Lewes Historical Society. He is an avid maritime historian and sailor, with experience crewing on tall ships in both the U.S. and U.K. Lyter curated the society’s exhibition, “Breaking Britannia’s Grasp: Lewes, the Royal Navy, and the Legacy of 1812.”
