Please join us on Thursday, July 9, at 5 p.m., for a 2020 Virtual History Book Festival “Spirited Discussion” with Jia Lynn Yang, author of One Mighty and Irresistible Tide: The Epic Struggle Over American Immigration, 1924–1965 (W.W. Norton & Co., 2020). This event is free however registration is required. REGISTER NOW
About the book
In 1924, the United States Congress instituted an immigration system of stringent ethnic quotas, sharply curtailing arrivals from southern and eastern Europe and outright banning those from nearly all of Asia. In the ensuing years, a coalition of lawmakers and activists descended from Jewish, Irish, and Japanese immigrants fought for reforms, resulting in the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act that opened the door to nonwhite immigration at levels never before seen.
About the author
Jia Lynn Yang is a deputy national editor at The New York Times who lives in Brooklyn, N.Y. Her family immigrated to the United States from Taiwan in the 1970s.
How to attend the online event
The event will be shared using Zoom—an easy, reliable platform for video and audio conferencing. Here are basic written instructions for using Zoom and a brief video tutorial.
All registered attendees will receive log-in information for this author discussion via email the day before the event. Because the number of Zoom connections is strictly limited, those registered may participate together with others in their household using a single device only. Registration log-in information may not be shared with others. No recording or photography is allowed.
Purchase the book
Purchase One Mighty and Irresistible Tide at Browseabout Books, official bookseller of the History Book Festival, and help support local independent bookstores. Online sources and digital versions are tempting; however, supporting local brick and mortar shops helps to preserve our vibrant main streets. Drop by Browseabout, order books online, or call the store at 302-226-2665.
