Lust on Trial

  • Lewes Public Library 111 West Adams Avenue 19958 United States (map)

A collaboration between the History Book Festival and the Lewes Public Library, this monthly discussion group focuses on books featured at this year's Festival and those to be featured at the 2019 Festival. The group is open to all lovers of history and meets at the Library (111 Adams Avenue, Lewes).

This month's book is “Lust on Trial: Censorship and the Rise of American Obscenity in the Age of Anthony Comstock”, by Amy Werbel (Columbia University Press, 2018)

A colorful cultural and social history framed by the story of America's first professional censor, whose campaign to rid America of lasciviousness and obscenity led to greater acceptance of materials he deemed objectionable. Werbel is an associate professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology and the recipient of fellowships from the Smithsonian and the Metropolitan museums.

The author will join the discussion via Skype.
