About the book
The history of organized labor in America has long been considered the domain of white men—but in fact, many of the struggles and hard-won gains we now take for granted involved members of the country’s most marginalized communities. In Kim Kelly’s inspirational book, figures like “first lady of the coal mines” Ida Mae Stull, Latino farmworkers’ heroine Maria Moreno, queer Black civil rights icon Bayard Rustin, pioneering sex workers’ rights activist Margo St. James, Ford whistleblower Suzette Wright, and the indomitable Mother Jones finally get their due.
About the author
Kim Kelly is an independent journalist, author, and organizer. Her writing on labor, class, politics, and culture has appeared in Teen Vogue (where she authors a regular column on labor), The New Republic, The Washington Post, The New York Times, and other publications.
Kelly was in conversation with D. Chanele Moore at the event.
D. Chanele Moore is an associate professor of sociology in the Associate in Arts Program of the University of Delaware, where she has been a voice for diversity, equity, and inclusion. Her teaching emphasizes the connections among people, their communities, and society.
