About the book
The daughter of a rich planter and an enslaved woman, Sylvie de Rosiers enjoys the life of a lady in 1791 Haitian society. But while she was born to privilege, she is never fully accepted by island elites. When the Haitian Revolution erupts, Sylvie and her brother leave their family behind to flee unwittingly into another uprising, in Paris. Sylvie quickly becomes enamored with the aims of the French Revolution, as well as with the revolutionaries themselves — most notably Maximilien Robespierre and his mistress, Cornélie Duplay.
About the author
Zoe Sivak strives to explore famous male figures through the lens of the women beside them — women who could have existed, even if history left them behind. When not engrossed in historical research, she is pursuing a Juris Doctorate and Master of Public Health degree in Philadelphia.
Sivak was in conversation with Adenike Marie Davidson at the event.
Adenike Marie Davidson is a professor of English and gender studies at Delaware State University and author of The Black Nation Novel: Imagining Homeplaces in Early African-American Literature.
